I submitted and received a matching grant for the first official Visitors Guide to the Tennessee Department of Tourism Development in 2007. In May 2009, the Town of Joneborough received a Pinnacle Award for the Visitors Guide.
I was excited about this challenging endeavor because we did not want our visitors guides to look like a book of advertisements. We wanted our guide to have many stories to support our "Storytelling Capital of the World" tag line.
I enjoyed participating as creative director and copy writer for the guide with the support of a committee of town staff and Hillhouse Graphic Design, Inc.
This was a wonderful opportunity for me to use my creative skills by creating advertisements that had a historical and story component to them. This is an example of how this concept was used in the advertisement for Mauk's of Jonesborough on the inside cover. I also created the table of contents on the opposite page to have an ongoing story theme.
There were also pages that contained multiple advertisements. I also threaded the historical and story theme throughout those pages. Here is an example of the Shopping section.
